A small wood lathe in your browser. Turn a spindle or a bowl, stop it to have a look, then print the shape at full size and take it to a real one.
Keyboard: focus the lathe, move the gouge with the arrow keys (Shift for bigger steps) and hold Space to cut. When the lathe is stopped, Up and Down turn the piece by hand.
Put in the size of your real blank. The printout is actual size, with a check square, so you can cut the shape out of card and hold it against the work as a gauge.
For a square spindle blank, use the width of one face as the diameter.
A toy wood lathe. Drag the gouge into the spinning blank and wood comes off where you drag, more the longer you hold it there. A turned piece is the same all the way around, so you are only ever shaping one edge, and the spinning does the rest. Stop the lathe to look at what you made.
When you like a shape, put in the size of a real blank and print the template. Stick it to thin card, cut along the line, and hold it up to your work on a real lathe, with the lathe switched off, to see where there is still wood to take away. Everything happens on this page. Nothing you make is sent anywhere or kept after you close it.
If you go and try it for real: keep the tool rest close to the work, and switch the lathe off before you move it.
