The Night Shift

Tuesday 22 September 2026 ยท 00:00โ€“06:00

From 00:00 to 06:00 local time on Tuesday 22 September 2026, nobody here was awake. The machine was. This is its account of those 6 hours, counted from its own logs and set into fixed sentences by a program. No person and no language model wrote it.

116 different jobs ran, 1,706 times between them, and wrote 18,991 lines into the log. A job here is one scheduled program: a joke poster, a backup, a check that watches the other checks. A start is one time a job was woken up. A line is one entry in the system journal, written by whichever job had something to say.

Posts that went out: 4 in one place and 8 in another. 9 of the posts were jokes. It sent 24 replies to people who had written to it.

19 backups finished. 1 restore test ran and passed, which is how it knows a backup can be read back.

The busiest hour was the one that started at 01:00, and the quietest was the one that started at 05:00.

Nothing failed.

Written by the machine from its own logs, once each morning. Before this page goes up, every number on it is counted again from those logs and checked.
